Hiking is an activity known to work wonders for the body. It not only helps with stronger bones and muscles, but it also has several mental health benefits. Getting yourself surrounded by nature works as an instant mood-booster, which leads to a reduction in stress. Stress is known to be a significant cause of high blood pressure and heart disease. Hiking is also said to calm anxiety. Similarly, completion of a hiking trail instills a sense of accomplishment that enhances self-]confidence. This helps open up doors to self-awareness. Other than improving your mental health, hiking allows you to improve your relationships as you move through the challenging trails with a partner.

Serving as Senior Assistant DA with the Kings County District Attorney, Justin Marrus is based in New York and has experience handling complex cases involving homicide, burglary, and assaults. An avid outdoorsman who enjoys mountaineering, Justin Marrus has undertaken long-distance backpacking trips. The type of equipment required for long distance hiking is highly variable, depending on the terrain, upkeep, and facilities on the trail. A multi-day trek in a wilderness area has a few minimum requirements, including a large backpack with rain cover, and a compact and lightweight tent. In addition, a weather appropriate sleeping bag and bag liner are recommended, as well as an air mattress that helps ease issues associated with uneven and rocky ground. In areas where available firewood is an issue or fires are prohibited, a camping stove, along with matches, should be packed in. Aluminum or meal sets that include a bowl, a cup, and utensils are also recommended, along with a pot for cooking items such as dried quick beans or rice, oatmeal, and soup mix. Beyond a good pair of boots, a pair of walking poles is recommended. This is particularly recommended when traversing rocky terrain that can place a strain on joints and lead to falls and sprains. It also makes sense to carry a Swiss Army Knife, or another utility knife, for cooking and camping related activities. |
